This Genuine Ancient Glass Pendant dates between 400 BC and 300 AD. This is his original vessel, so beautifully timeworn and exquisitely sturdy, it is a magnificent pendant of true, irreplaceable character, well worth its antiquarian and occult value.
A spectacular specimen of Ancient Roman glass depicting his face, with highly desirable natural patina as a result of centuries upon centuries worth ‘’ oxidation. Structurally in very fine condition, it is an incredible piece of ancient craftsmanship.
Generalized as a loose term, Ancient Roman Glass is used to refer to most all ancient glass after the Mesopotamian period, just prior to the rise of Rome, up to the 4th Century AD, geographically stretching from the Rhine River (which stretches from modern day Switzerland up to the Netherlands) & down to Egypt, & from Britain over to Asia Minor (what is today's Turkey) & countries along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Made of white silica sand & soda ash, naturally occurring impurities like iron & manganese were not only inevitable, but purposefully added to give it color. The green hue of this particular vessel implies it would have had a higher elemental content of iron.
The Iridescence & patina of ancient glass is a highly prized visual indicator that the piece has, in fact, been exposed to the elements for a couple thousand years. Over the centuries, the natural exposure to the elements of the surrounding environment causes the thin layers of the glass to slightly separate from one another & flake, leading to a refraction of light between each layer, creating a prismatic, iridescent patina.
Ancient glass should not be exposed to water or abrasive chemicals.
